GOT COLLAGE SKILLZ?

My goal for today is to make you laugh. That would be the only reason to share the two hideous projects I made before I finally got to my Punky Scraps collage project for this week's challenge.

First is the final design which I like a lot and will be trying again as the resulting color is really exciting:
Failure is key
MATERIALS: WRMK card stock, tissue paper from Natalie Malik on Etsy, Alphas from Cosmo Cricket, coffee stain stamp from Cocoa Daisy, Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher and paint from Kaiser Craft.
Thank you so much Natalie Malik! I recently won her grand prize give-away which totally came at the right time.
Mostly because I got this:
Hand made "How To" zine from Natalie that totally saved my life last night.
Buy it if you'd like some great tips on collage with tissue paper.
A great handmade "zine" that taught me how to actually glue tissue paper without ruining my project. I also won two beautiful hand made bookmarks and a great pack of ephemera that included the tissue paper I used above.

If you want to see someone make modern and lovely collages with real technical mastery please visit Natalie's blog Awkward and Beautiful.

This is the first time I ever try collage. I avoid anything truly artsy- not because I don't like artsy stuff (I LOVE artsy) but because it requires a level of knowledge and control over technique I have not reached yet.

Before you think this is me beating myself up again please wait till you see what I did before Natalie saved my scrappy butt.

And NOW... The FIASCOS.

AAAAA! This is me trying to use some scraps left over from a cool previous project and having "fun" with textures and shapes. I like the colors and the repeated straight lines but this is a HOT summer mess.
Ok now for the real hum-digger.
Please block your children from seeing this.

This horribly BIOLOGICAL piece sprung from two thoughts:
Though number 1: I want to make a commentary on the images of women in fashion- I will sew the outlines, fill in the photos with paint and write "Not me, not now, not ever.. and that's ok" on it.

Before I could fully execute thought number 1- this happened:
Though number 2: OOO this glue would make for great texture!

EEEEEEEEWWW! Never should the two meet! I'm embarrassed to share it except this is supposed to be a real deal blog right? Hideous craft failures and all.

I would like to point out I'm not a complete hack. I recognize when something is too awful to show- except as entertainment here in this blog.

Now that I've either shocked you into silence or made you laugh derisively please head on over to Punky Scraps and join the October challenges. This week's is all about collage. I'm hoping you will learn as much as I did.
Current Favorite Toy- this is a family blog after all.

Stretch Your Sketch Featured artist @2Peas!!

So I nearly fell out my chair when I opened a message from someone over at Two Peas. I reacted with typical New Yorker suspicion and wrote back:
"Here is a reply to your email- as requested"...and that's it!
 Da noive!

Can I defend myself? My yahoo inbox is full of Viagra ads from goodness knows where since this is literally the first time I ever write the word!

My thinking? "How do I know this isn't some mysterious phishing email from random pick your country?" "Maybe they will invade my yahoo account and discover JUST HOW MUCH MONEY I SPENT ON SCRAP CRAP THIS YEAR."
"OH NO! They could steal my identity and PREVENT me from buying more!!!"
And so, my cryptic answer.

Thankfully Jen Gallacher must be used to this crazed reaction as she didn't bat an eye.
She sent this along.
The 2 Peas Stretch Your Sketch class for September premieres today.
I am so excited.. and scared...
Please feel free to swing on over and check it out. I believe you have to sign up but it's a free class.
First attempt:
Great American Road Trip
I'm supposed to use stamps as much as possible.. but didn't make them stand out in this page.
Also- doesn't it just look jumbled? Ahh but the Amy Tan paper is soooo beautiful!
And sorry but my photos ROCK!!! I just need to showcase them better.
The sketch kicked my scrap booty!
I love multiple photo lay outs.
I love large shapes on a page.
But never before had a seen a sketch with both- Jen is a scrap wiz!!!
Perhaps you were wondering- "I thought Michelle was back from vacation? Why hasn't she updated her blog?" Or not- I'm not completely delusional- I know you have a life.
Where was I? Trying to get a good hold on this sketch!

Second attempt:
Today you are two
I thought I needed to up the cute quotient so I did another page about Lola's birthday toys.
But I was explicitly asked to keep the size 12 by 12.. and I forgot.
I really like the variety of paper prints and crazy thread remnants here.
Third try (so NOT the charm!):
First Halloween..
...Was a hot mess and so is this page.
I do love this detail so this is a REDO page.

FINALLY! THE ONE!
So you don't like messy pages huh? Oh well, TOO BAD.
I like the uneven lines, the jumbled sizes and I tried to use the triangulation rule of design.
The ampersand comes from a Sassafras alpha clear stamp set so old
it was yellowed when I got it (from A Cherry On Top.)
The circle title alphas are from Lawn Fawn.
HOT MESS TIP! When using AC Z!ng powder keep your machine sewing away or you'll get the flaking you see up there in the title. I almost lost a few letters but I persevered and it came out fine. Also- I did this BEFORE Studio Calico featured using a a title in a circle as a technique last week- just wanted to put that out there. (No, I'm not claiming the technique!)

Thank you Jen and Two Peas for this huge opportunity! If my final page was a little... underwhelming- I hope everyone can see I tried and tried. It's not the sketch's fault. It's me.

This is a 25 foot tall mural of the New York State Pavilion at the World's Fair in Queens.
It's done in CHALK- so AMAZING!!!!

Westward HOOOOO!

Dear cousin Evelyn (and hubby Sandy) have just offered to let us ride along in their 3 day road trip to Salt Lake City!! YAAY! This was SO last minute! Four days till THE BIG DAY when the moving company called to say they couldn't find a driver who was willing to go that far BUT for a mere 300 hundred dollars extra they would GUARANTEE one. Can you believe it?? The nerve!!!!

So they asked for their money back. The moving company said they would loose their deposit, Evelyn, a true Brooklynite, promised legal bloody murder. They got their money back. Since we are literally hitching a ride and staying with family this is going to be a very affordable adventure.  All we have to do is try to keep Lola from screaming us silly and and we should be ok.

Needless to say, the grandmothers are very VERY annoyed and think we are "crazy". This is our reasoning: We're bored. We don't have jobs for the first time since we were both 16. We have paid the rent. We have a camera and several new babies in SLC we both REALLY want to see. So I know it's irresponsible but heck with it- we are OFF. Plus Jet Blue had SLC to NYC flights for 150 bucks!!! You can't pass that up!!!

Totally unrelated but remember how I threatened a totally embarrassing layout? I would say "Poor kid" but I know she's gonna run me ragged so I have no regrets!

Embarrassing
MATERIALS: Sassafras Lass Sunshine Broadcast paper and mustard alphas, My Little Shoebox mini alphas, Crate Paper Emma's Box stickers, Mister Huey in Schoolhouse Red and Sunshine, Pink Paislee Mistables ribbon, Crate Paper woodgrain paper.
I won't be able to blog while on the road- we don't have smart phones but maybe the motels will have wi-fi? Yeah, I didn't think so either. So if you have any business or want to second my Mom who wants to kill me or want to enable me with reasonable arguments for undertaking road trips with toddlers in tow please leave a comment below. Au Revoir!!!!

PS- don't forget to join the Punky Scraps challenge this saturday- it's gonna be AWESOME!!!!
The idea for today is: have the adventure NOW. Tomorrow may never come.

Punky Scraps Tissue Paper Challenge

Ok so I've been furiously destroying paper ALL WEEK for this week's Punky Scraps challenge which asks YOU, dear scrapper, to incorporate tissue paper into your layout.

There are many MANY ways to use this wonderfully thin and pliable material. Plus you probably already have tons of it around the house. I've seen people use Modge Podge to glue pieces in layers all over a page (and all kinds of other random things- like glass or transparencies). I've seen it get crumpled, wrinkled with water, ripped, stamped and misted with paint- it always looks great.

I tried them all and FAIIIIILED! Miserably. But if you remember I posted a page last week that used tissue paper and vellum- this was my "test page" for this challenge  and darned if that page was more interesting than anything I came up with after.

See what I mean about not TRYING- just doing?
Listen to Nike (the Goddess of Victory) and JUST DO IT!!
Don't study, don't over think, just DO! DO! DO!
Oh OK- you are allowed to draw up a sketch if you like. :)

So here's what I did for this page- I know it's not Rocket Science but bear with me:
1. Misted the vellum in Mister Huey Lemon and Tattered Angels Patina and used a brayer to smooth the mist droplets out. I put a Maya Road kraft doily and used it as a mask-LOVE THOSE!
2. Used a Martha Stewart doily punch to punch through some tissue and vellum paper. This is harder than it looks. I doubled up the material to get the punch to work and still had to cut out the rounded edges.
3. Put my hand on the vellum to trace it and stitched it right up- this was so FUUUN!

Super duper fast page! Now please head on out and create your own!!
My failed page was foot related- Lola has beautiful feet but
I know most people find feet gross so I kept second guessing myself. Oh well.

Create (your internal script)

Ok so I've had a post on the brain for months regarding...
THE NATURE OF MEMORY.
The headline was going to be in bold italics just like that and get all heavy on how human memories are evanescent. I was gonna to use that 5 dollar word and EVERYTHING!
Materials: Scenic Route graph paper (I really wish I had bought 20 of those),  Vellum paper, Tissue paper,  Sunrise Thickers in Natural, Glitz minis in yellow, Studio Calico Mister Huey in Sunshine and bluegrass, Maya Road kraft, Martha Stewart doily punch
I recently listened to an NPR story about how a memory changes each time you recall it. How photographing a moment "for posterity", talking about it with others or even writing it down totally transforms your memory of it. So the act of scrapbooking to preserve a memory is essentially destroying it. This KNOCKED ME OUT MAN! I sat down and went WHOA.

But now I can't remember which NPR show or the exact study so I can offer it up for your consideration. Isn't that ironic?
Why am I babbling on about this?
A bad thing (not that bad- gotta keep things in perspective) ALMOST happened to me tonight so I decided to write it down and screw the memory up forever.

I thought I lost my iTouch! "Uhm ok- Soooo?" you say. The thing is that my ipod might as well be attached to my arm! It's become more important than my actual computer or cell phone. I have photos of Lola in there that I love beyond all reason.
Like this one:
I know it's fuzzy. Her expression makes me smile each time I see it.

And this one:

Eating rocks- yes I know- EVIL MOM!
What would I do if I lost my iTouch??? CRY! Which is exactly what I did. I also went out looking for it at 10pm on the waterfront. It's not as scary as it sounds- everything is now well lit and there are families walking around taking in the cool night air- which reminds me- we need to get out more at night! But I digress.

Here is the WHOLE POINT of this loooong story. I remember using my ipod at home. I remember the new photo of Lola I simply HAD to look at when we got home from the park. I remember sitting on my couch, showing it to Dave and hugging Lola because she's so freaking cute. So why am I running through Brooklyn streets AT NIGHT asking people id they saw a pink ipod touch?

Because I don't trust my memory. I've been teased so many times about my "flakiness" that I've internalized that script! I disregarded the internal picture of me enjoying the ipod AT HOME and immediately became convinced I was an ipod LOOSER. Aah the INHUMANITY!

Don't do this to yourself! Self? Pay attention please! Don't do that again. Don't let other people's ideas of you enter the blood stream- it's harder to resist than anything but TRY. Try to remember me running down the street frantically looking for a pink iTouch which was under my desk the whole time- or try anyway- reading this is creating and destroying memories as your eyes run over each word.... create.... destroy.... Create!    Destroy!!!
CREATE!!!! (your own internal script)
Favorite Lolster shot of the year! Almost lost!

Inspiration/Innovation: Discovery and Creativity

I cannot BELIEVE it's already June 27th! I spent all winter yearning for summer, now summer is here but I'm not taking full advantage of it. Part of it is the sharp shooting pains in my lower back. I can't really carry Miss Lola's stroller up and down the 4 flights of stairs to my walk up apartment. I really REALLY wish we lived in an elevator building. I say this each and every single time I leave and return "home". I am SO ready for a huge change in lifestyle!
Whatever. Today is Monday and so I am determined to SIEZE the day!
Here is a page promised last week:
Materials: Jillibean Soup Monsters paper, corrugated alphas and scallop frames, Sassafras Lass papers and Entwined Blooms, Maya Road star pins, clouds from American Crafts paper, Bird from Paper Issues Etsy store kit
Over the weekend I saw a FASCINATING documentary on Origami. I've always loved the mathematical and transformational nature of that paper folding art but the practitioners in this documentary take it to a whole new level. what they do is simply AMAZING and their work is not just decorative- it's being studied by NASA for possible use in transportation and fueling projects! I was floored. But it reminded me of the tiny line that exists between artistic creativity/ inspiration and scientific discovery.
Check it out: Between The Folds. We streamed it on Netflix and let me tell you- it was the most though provoking hour I've spent in a long time.

Two artist quotes to ponder:
First- "(Referring to his Origami work) It always feels awkward and like it's not gonna work and then it does".  This dude is saying this while literally twist smashing his 3 hour long project to make it swirl- it was excruciating (fascinating!!!) to watch!

Two- " The process of making is the object. The object (your project) looks good if the process of making it felt good" This guy had a very meaningful quote about how people tend to value paper "eliphants" that look like real "eliphants" and how people get caught up in the literal and ignore abstract art's ability to make you see the world differently but every time he said "eliphants" I busted out laughing.

Yes! It's the journey- the discovery- the working that matters- not the actual final product. This is why I take photos! This is why I make unpretty pages (sometimes)! It's MORE than the final product for me- it's about playing and discovering and communicating.

Is it the same for you? Do you like loosing yourself in the process? Or is the final product what you want? Both are equally valid and good if you ask me.

So there you are- a clue on how to follow your nose into the great dark that is "creativity"- wise words from paper obsessed men.

Social Network overload!

I'm expanding my "social networks" to see if I can find a new job- it's amazing how many leads now come from social networking websites. I'm totally overwhelmed- if ya'll have any tips on how to deal with digi info overload please leave a comment- I'm just trying to keep up.
Here's my latest page:

Central Park Zoo
Materials: Martha Stewart polka dot paper, Bazzill cardstock, Studio Calico mists in Sunshine, lemon and Schoolhouse, Making Memories polka puffy alphas, Glitz Design woodgrain alphas, Crate Paper buttons, My Mind's Eye woodgrain paper, K and Co handmade line flower pin, Elle's Studio Love This Moment tag (made into flag), Hearts chipboard used as a mask- thanks Queen Kat!
This was a rare moment of fun with chipboard and spray mists this week. The old mojo is out on vacation big time. I have a few assignments due so I will force them. Usually it helps to work on deadline but right now it just causes me to wig out and give up. I'm feeling lots of pressure from the job search and everything else that's going awry right now- the scrap should be a distraction from all that (but true to form I just make it into another freak out moment). But please PLEASE let me NOT complain! There is always a solution- always personal evolution!

It's sunday! Go forth and picture take!!!
It's Puerto Rican Day Parade time in NYC! WUEPA!

Going Tag crazy- a lesson in randomness

Hiya! Over the labor day holiday I found myself furiously trying to finish my tag project for Kreatorville Krafts.
For some reason I had a really hard time with it. I wanted to pull a "shock and awe" scrap stunt and that was my downfall- never forge into any creative endeavor with perfection in mind- that way lies madness.
Favorite 3 tags from my tag swap project for Kreatorville Krafts.
PROJECT GOALS:
1. Use my scrap pile- papers whose patterns I loved so much I kept even tiny pieces that were now taking over my desk.
2. Use metal rims from Making Memories. I have so many of these I wanted to showcase them in a project.
3. Make the actual tags- don't buy them.
3. Use at least 1 stamp and 1 punch on every tag- I have so many stamps and punches! They hardly get used because they are in plastic boxes out of easy reach- this forced me to break them out and play.

"MINI TUTORIAL"- insert self-derisive snort here.
1. Using ready made tag as a template, cut out tags from left over office folders.
2. Make 3 "test tags"- experiment with acrylic paint- decide it looks great. Ruin them with microbeads.
3. Paint each tag with white acrylic paint to tone- down bright primary hues a bit.
4.  Experiment with make up brushes to sprinkle Tattered Angels Golden Goddess Glimmer Glam. Mascara brush works best- so does dropper from Baby Ibuprofen (Hope Lola never needs it).
5. Mist each tag with Mister Huey"Warm Calico" to "soften" stark white paint- have fun with polka dot template left over from circle punches made for project.
6. Start layering paper bits- panic tags are all looking the same- take a break.
7. Take metal rims and attach using basic stitch to each tag- rims go over the actual photo.
8. Project has a message- think- add Kaiser Craft mini alphas to each tag then cover alphas with Glossy Accents so that they stay put while in the mail.
9. Stamp each tag and sign- make sure signature is illegible thus besides the point. Whatevs the project is DONE! WOO HOO!

WHAT I LEARNED:
1. Pre cut your scraps and just play with resulting random shapes- do NOT try to "pre-design" each tag.
2. Paint and mist the entire tag cardstock THEN cut out each tag- that makes your pattern more random and natural looking.
3. When layering tiny pieces on light background colors highlight edges to make them separate.
4. Sometimes starting with tag titles is best as that can lead your design process. Use word association to come up with titles that aren't too "bossy".
5. DO NOT try to make a multiple item project with impressing others in mind- you will get "crafter's block" and suffer many hours of self doubt- let it all hang out"- as it were.

Final Results:

Materials: Pendaflex folders- brights, Making Memories metal tag edges, Sassafras Lass Amplify paper,
Fiskars Large circle squeeze punch,  The Girl's Paperie "On Holiday" mixed dot paper, Ek Success Large Edger -circles,  Double embossed dotted lace and Bubbles punches, Jillibean Soup corrugated shapes
This was great- onto my next large project- hand made post cards for each and every facebook friend! Do you want one? Friend me! Michelle Hernandez, Brooklyn, New York- or not- you can see them here as I will post as I make them.

Using fabric on a layout

I got a sewing machine so I could learn to sew pillowcase style dresses for Lola as I love them. I also wanted to make her Alice in Wonderland apron for her first birthday.
Needless to say it hasn't happened- yet. But the machine gets used- a LOT- on paper. One day I WILL learn to sew but for now I'm happy to just know how to make a straight line.
For this page I cut some flowers off the fabric that was used to make Lola's dress (purchased online- have not been able to master the pillow case dress yet) I then stuck them onto the paper using Zip Dry glue- MISTAKE! Here's what I recommend- use that iron on adhesive webbing they use to make quilts- it makes sticking things and sewing them on paper much easier- this is what happens when you skip that crucial step:
I love this series of shots- it's very Lil Red Ridding Hood.
The fold from 1 year of storage in the bed linens closet has also been preserved- oops!
I like that the stitching around the flower outline is uneven but
some adhesive webbing would have kept that fabric stuck in place.
This project came together so quickly even I was surprised- Lily Bee Hello Sunshine and some K & Company Handmade alphas and we are good to go!

Hipstamatic iPod App strikes again!!! Love the sunshine filter effect you
get using the Jimmy lens and blanko film!
My favorite detail from this project.
This is my first real attempt at a 2 page layout with matching pages. I really liked feeling like I had more room to play with but I didn't run around trying to find more fiddly bits to add- I just wanted to showcase the fabric (and my lack of ironing skills).

Get PUNKY! Week 2 sketch

This is my second week as a Guest Designer for Punky Scraps and I'm having insane amounts of fun. Need evidence?
Beautiful Girls
MATERIALS: American Crafts papers, AC Thickers alphas, Crafter's workshop Cosmic swirl template, floral fabric, die cuts and words from K & Co,  Maya Road satin pleated ribbon. My Mind's Eye velvet ribbon and ball fringe.
Whoop! Whoop! Slam dunk. I am seriously loving all the American Crafts color here. Here's the sketch for week 2:
Punky sketch for April week 2
Punky sets your design bug free. Paint splattered incorrectly on my page? So what? It's Punky! Edges of machine stitch frayed? It's all good- it's PUNKY. I'm telling you it's a license to experiment and that's just what I needed at this point. I was getting way too self conscious and loosing sight of why I scrap- to HAVE FUN.
Nieces Noe and Emi. These pix popped up on their facebook profile one day and  I simply HAD to scrap them.
The sponsor for this month is Crafter's Workshop whose templates I've been collecting for a while now. I wanted to get a little more paint crazy here but I only had 1 sheet of this gorgeous Dear Lizzy paper and I've been known to ruin entire layouts with too much spritz so I added just a touch of SC Mister Huey in white over the Crafter's Workshop Cosmic Swirls 12 x 12 template and loved the subtle swirls I got.
Minor twist- photos hanging where banners should be.
"Journaling" where photos would normally be placed.
I have an entire box of "bling" which I rarely use
because I rarely remember it's there. No more!
Now please run to Punky and make a page of your own- you might win a wonderful prize from Crafter's Workshop!

Paper Issues Blog Hop WELCOME!

Hiya!
I put on my big girl pants for this. No more DT rejection self pity! It's time to get happy and have FUN!
This is my first mini book. I have decided- I LOVE mini books! I felt no pressure, the format is so small it limits my "Is it finished NOW?" dithering. I took the same amount of time making this that I usually take making a page, 4 days.

I also got to whip out every single trick pony I own for this- stitching- check!, color blocking- check!, ribbon- check!... texture, paper piecing, 3 D effects- it's all there! Now that I think about it- I could have done some dry embossing and some glitter effects but a girl can only do so much in 4 days.
ENOUGH blathering! Here are some PIX!

Cover- LOVE that Pink Paislee herringbone tape!

Redid this page and LOVE this version- it's a take on Crate Paper's weather collection die cut paper with the cloud border. All clouds have a silver lining in my book!

How much do I love K & Co's "Que Sera Sera" line and Maya Road's pleated ribbon? As much as I love my Mexican tin art collection.

I love living in Williamsburg Bk because the amount of guerilla poster art and graffiti here is BANANAS. Don't stand still too long- you'll get a poster on yer chest.

I LUVS me some sea salt and vinegar chips with half raw steak and beer.  October Afternoon paper and an Obscure line die cut from Basic Grey.

Why do I love grid prints so much? Because I don't have to measure or pencil in cut lines- I just follow the grid!
Magic Mesh- mana from heaven for scrappers if you ask me.

Now that I have Miss Lola I don't ride as much but there's nothing like a 6 hour long bike ride through NYC's river side bike paths- simply GLORIOUS! LOVELY Hambly Studio paper!
Lola likes to steal apples- here's she's heisting a neighbor's lunch- no joke! I love that munchkin. Sassy paper and K&CO alphas.

When I finished this page I did a little dance- it's PERFECT! These are all scraps from other projects- the red ribbon was wrapped around an ETSY order and I kept it because that color is so lusciously RED- it's like a punch in the kisser.

I bought the Anna Griffin paper pad for  this pattern only- it's bamboo and it's FABULOUS! Studio Calico wood veneer heart, Hambly alpha sticks on post it note paper and mini scrabble tile- I LOVE those too!

FUUUUN! Getting on a plane scares the bejesus outta me but once I land it's MILLER TIME- ok maybe not- it's museum and botanical garden time! The cloud punches were unintended but PERFECT- I love it when a project comes together!

I love NY- more than ever.
Most favorite of all- my family.
Close up- pop out cloud, stringy sun and cut up grass- fave details! New fave brand MLS.
I have a give away as well! Here's what you can win if you follow or leave a comment (doing 1 of each gets you 2 entries):
Week 1 (March 19th to the 26th) mini book prize pack
Webster's Pages 6x6 papers, Petaloo flowers, SEI die cuts, Dusty Attic Decorative Gate,  K & Co Que Sera Sera mini papers, Basic Grey small details, white ruffle ribbon and 3 home made die cut shape packs.
Week Two (March 27th to April 2nd) mini altered project pack
Webster's page's Die cut 6x6 papers, Little Yellow Bicycle doilies, Dusty Attic flourishes, Prima and Petaloo flowers,  Korean sticky lace (CANNOT find this in the USA) K & Co handmade specialty papers, Ruby Rocket felt oval frame
Ok onto the next fabulous gal fave scrap buddy extraordinaire: DAWN PERKINS of MOJO MAYHEM fame!!!!
If you just moseyed on by and don't know what I'm talking about please take a gander at the blog hop intro page on PAPER ISSUES and make sure to follow, link up a project or friend us on Facebook to enter in the drawing for the FANTASTIC Crate Paper prize kit.
